The Ghost BBQ was launched in 2015 as a restaurant division of Savory Cuisines Catering in Boulder, CO. Although we enjoyed success as a sit-down eatery, it was soon decided that The Ghost focus exclusively on our catering side of business. We continue to operate today as a catering arm of Savory Cuisines. The concept for The Ghost originated when Chef & Owner Bob Sargent traveled to Dripping Springs, Texas—home of The Salt Lick BBQ and near the birthplace of Texas barbeque—to visit a friend. As a longtime enthusiast of BBQ cuisine, Bob was blown away by the BBQ culture in Texas and the number of outstanding eateries the state boasted.
In the city of Austin, people can enjoy the famous Franklin Barbeque at which visitors can wait hours just for the chance to try a perfectly smoked Brisket. And in Lockhart, TX, there is Black’s BBQ, Kreuz Market and Smitty’s; just to name a few. Although Bob stated he would never start his own barbeque business in Texas, several owners of these establishments invited him to see their behind-the-scenes operations and chefs at work. When Bob returned to Colorado, he brought that valuable insight with him.
Back in Boulder and with a name for his new business: The Ghost BBQ—coined from Bob’s observation that smoke curling skywards from the grill bears a likeness to an unearthly apparition—it was time for Bob to find a smoker and start barbecuing. After a lengthy search, he finally found the perfect one in Sikeston, MO. To transport the full-sized smoker back to Colorado he rented a Ford F-150 and crossed his fingers it would make the trip. A crane then had to be hired to lift it over the street buildings and into place at the courtyard behind Boulder Theatre; it was then moved again to Savory’s kitchen where it still resides and is used today.
A signature BBQ sauce made with the spicy ghost pepper was developed to accompany our smoked meats, along with additional sauces inspired by the best in America. Using only quality woods for smoking, The Ghost sources Hickory from Missouri and Mesquite from Texas to achieve the best, authentic smoked flavor. All of our sides and sauces are made from scratch, and all meats come from our home state of Colorado.
We are capable of catering small, intimate parties of 10 people all the way up to 2000 guests for your next big BBQ event. The Ghost BBQ has won many competitions, online awards and is recognized as the top BBQ caterer on a number of local BBQ blogs.
